Montanejos is situated in the very heart of the Espadán mountain range and is a place difficult to describe even with photographs of some of its impressive areas.

Legend has it that a Moorish King was so taken by the quality of the fountains in the area that he ordered the construction of a sort of a spa, intending to make the beauty of his favourite fountains eternal. This is the origin of the legendary Baños fountain, which has attracted tourists to the area for decades.

The Arabs settled in the town around the 11th century. Nevertheless there are remains of the human presence dating back to Prehistoric times and most precisely since the first Metal Ages. These remains were found in the famous Cueva Negra, about 100 m from the Baños fountain. According to the oldest data available, Montanejos was founded between the years 225 and 205 BC, when the “turboletas” left Teruel and emigrated to the woods of these valleys in order to move away from the oppressive Carthaginians and Romans.

Discovering Montanejos
Inside the town, a visit to the old Arab tower and the Santiago Apóstol 17th century church is a must. The Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados in La Alquería is also a worthwhile visit. Leaving the town, there are some splendid landscapes, such as the Arenós reservoir, Morrón de Campos or the area of Cabezo and Estrechos.

The Baños fountain
The affluence of water has made a total of 54 fountains in Montanejos possible, among which there is a fountain named Los Baños which gives the plentiful volume, 5,000 litres per minute and at a temperature of 25 degrees. There are other highly valued fountains, such as La Zorrica, La Cerrada, El Señoro and La Pechina.

Hiking
The irregular relief of Montanejos is ideal for many sports, such as hiking (GR-36, GR-7 and PR-V-126 paths), fishing, horse riding, mountain biking and high risk activities, such as gully walking, climbing, bungee jumping from bridges, potholing, etc.
